What’s “The Brick Idea”?

Invention fascinates us. Imagine Edison’s excitement when the very first light bulb lit up his dim laboratory. Picture Wilbur Wright standing on the beach at Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, as he watched his brother experience humanity’s first powered flight.

Feel the frustration that drove Josephine Cochrane to craft the first dishwasher – and the thrill that it’s first users must have enjoyed!

They were Creatives. But they are not alone. . .Each person, whether technical or artistic, can contribute uniquely to the world. The Brick Idea is for Thinkers who want to be Doers and for Makers who want to be Innovators. This blog will explore the great invention stories of America’s past while sharing the creative brainstorms of today’s inventors.

Innovation is for all areas of life. The most outstanding writers, artists, leaders and entrepreneurs are constantly improving in their work. In the same way, successful parents, spouses and friends continually invest in personal growth. George Washington Carver, the scientist famous for inventing hundreds of uses for the peanut put it this way, “When you can do the common things of life in an uncommon way, you will command the attention of the world.” The Brick Idea encourages a holistic approach to innovation that puts personal development before productivity.

The Brick Idea started 2 years ago at a garage sale when I found a couple of giant LEGO sets selling for only a few dollars each. What a steal! Gradually it grew into my garage where I increased my inventory and began piecing together famous scenes from invention history. Since that time I have acquired and read dozens of books on inventors and innovation. The time has come to make something original: a brick blog with valuable life advice.

Through this blog, I want to inspire your imagination while handing you the tools you need to start innovating. You can expect stories, practical tips, a wealth of resources and some occasional humor illustrated in a way designed to ignite creativity. I will post a new article each week along with some bonus content from your favorite inventors. Finally, I have created a space on the site to feature an occasional guest author and artist who has an invention-themed brick model and/or article to share. Only a few of these “VIP Guests” will be featured each year, but I will respond to each submission sent through my “Contact” page.
